Our 14th-century gem has long been a haven for outsiders. Originally designed as accommodation for travellers visiting St Mary’s Abbey, we like to keep the tradition of hospitality alive by hosting weddings that defy the ordinary.

Tucked within the organic space of the York Museum Gardens - think crumbling ruins, ancient trees, and secret corners - our venue is less about cookie-cutter-weddings and more edgy-cinematic-love-story. The ruins of St Mary’s Abbey frame the gardens, a perfect backdrop for some atmospheric photos after the park closes to the public. Drama, history, and so much mood.

Downstairs, a space fit for up to 100 souls to witness your vows. We welcome personal celebrant-led ceremonies, but we are also fully licensed and can host a legal wedding ceremony with registrars too.

Upstairs, room for up to 120 to feast - then let loose into the night with up to 150 of your favourites for an unforgettable party.

The Hospitium is also a stunning place to host an intimate ceremony with all your nearest pals – our afternoon packages would pair wonderfully with another venue in York, if you wanted dinner and an evening elsewhere.

You’ll find us right in York city centre (easy transport links and loads of accommodation choices nearby), but it feels like you’ve slipped into another world. A shadowy, soulful, camera-ready sanctuary.

What do you do within your business to make it more accessible and inclusive? Our venue is fully accessible with wheelchair ramps, lifts, accessible toilet facilities and hearing loops available throughout the building. We are happy to adapt any wedding to the client's needs, along with being set in a peaceful garden space, which allows for quite areas to be available. What is your favourite random fun fact? Squirrels lose 70% of the acorns they bury, but this is a good thing because it means more oak trees get planted to help feed future generations of squirrels! What is a defining moment for you within your business? We are a charity organisation and all proceeds from the wedding bookings support the York Museum Gardens, a wonderful natural space that provides a quiet and restful space, free to local residents and visitors. Our increase in conference and wedding bookings over the past year has meant that the gardens could continue to invest in the biodiversity of this special space.
